BRAIN BOX

THE THREE NECKTIES

Mr. Brown, Mr. Green and Mr. Black were lunching together. One wore a brown necktie, one a green tie, and one a black. "Have you noticed," said the man with the green tie, "that although our ties have colours that match our names, not one of us has on a tie that matches his own name?"

"By golly you are right!" said Mr. Brown.

What colour tie was each man wearing?

THE BOOK WORM

A set of 10 books is arranged in an orderly fashion on a bookshelf. Each book has a 100 pages making 1000 pages in all. A worm starting on the first page of the first page of the first book eats through the last page of the last book. How many pages has he eaten?

Answers

1. Brown couldn't be wearing a brown tie for then it would correspond to his own name. He couldn't be wearing a green tie because the man asking the question was wearing it. Therefore he was wearing black. Thus the green tie was worn by Black and the brown tie by Green.

2. He ate 802. Look at a row of books on a shelf. You can see why the worm didn't touch 99 pages of the first and 99 pages of the last.
